The desire for desires

The sun is out today. But for how long, nobody knows. It had felt like December since Sunday night where there was nothing but rain. And it sure brought woe to homemakers fretting about their laundry. For the past 4 days, my house was washing-powder scented - smelt good, actually - and romantic too, with the orange hue from the lights I had to turn on to counter the sunless gray.

I often found myself wondering what people do on a rainy day when they're not expected at work. Do they still brave the rain in pursuit of a [perceived] more worthy outdoor activity? Or snuggle up in their beds with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book? Or watch TV the whole day? Or sit in front of their computers still working furiously from their homes? Or lament how boring life is whenever it rains?

And I suddenly recall Sumiko Tan in Lifestyle this January - "boredom arises not for a lack of things to do, but the inability to latch on to any specific activity. Nothing engages us despite an often profound desire for engagement."

Are you bored? Let's go out for a cup of coffee....
