I blame it on Brown and Levinson but I know there has got to be something more to it than just a theory. And I kept wondering, what is it exactly that makes something someone says polite or rude? Of course, we will probably all agree that a shared background is of absolute importance when it comes to deciphering humour or the slightest sarcasm. But that would bring us to a whole new level of contempt, wouldn't it?
For the longest time, I always found myself wondering why some people would say the meanest of things and then laugh it off as a joke. I believe that "just kidding" isn't just that, kidding. Or is it? Maybe our personal experiences in life cause us to attach different values on the things we like to or don't like to hear.
But then again, perhaps it's just me...
