I thought I'd forgotten the sugar for my daily wake-me-up as I sank my teeth into the crunchy Alcapone. No, I had added the routine two teaspoonfuls into my mug. The combination of the doughnut with my regular Moccona had seemingly altered the taste of the coffee, making it more bitter than usual. But I know this acridity is only temporary; the bitterness of the beverage was intensified by the sweetness of the bread.
And somehow, I can't help but be intrigued by the simple message this breakfast has not failed to show me. If life were a regular cuppa, the occasional bitter aftertaste is but a distortion of the real flavours of life.
Fifteen minutes later, I found myself repeating "No, I really have enough." as my mother tried to get me to finish the last one. And I couldn't help hide a grin as I recalled something I used to say to the students, "Which part of 'no' don't you understand?"
N-O. I found out over the years that although this monosyllabic word is possibly one of the earliest word a toddler learns, it becomes increasingly hard for one to say to another. Sometimes, I couldn't help but wonder if it were because the speaker couldn't refuse the hearer or because the hearer wouldn't hear of it.
Ahhh...breakfast, one of my favourite meals of the day.
