Today...
1. Wear something green.
2. Drink stout.
3. Eat beef and cabbage.
...because it's St Patrick's Day!
The first St Patrick's Day was celebrated in the United States in 1762 when the Irish soldiers serving in the English army marched through New York City. In the 1800s, the Potato Famine led to a near-million Irish to flee to America to escape starvation, but faced displacement and discrimination for decades. Realising their political power in numbers, the annual St Patrick's Day parades (previously negatively portrayed by local newspapers) later became a show of power for Irish Americans, an especially proud moment for their ancestors had to fight stereotypes and racial prejudices [in order] to gain acceptance in America.
To me, St Patrick's Day hold a very special meaning for my birthday falls on the day after and it was funny how my (new) friends would crack their heads, literally, to figure out when St Patrick's Day is.
