Goodbye, Ah Meng

I've never been close to her, in fact, I'd always taken her for granted - the icon of my favourite zoo in the whole world - it was as if she would be around forever. So when the headlines in today's papers read "Ah Meng Dies", I found myself going, "ohhhhhh...." And for a moment, I felt that I'd lost something.

I had my first glimpse of Ah Meng when I was nine. It was my first trip to the zoo with the school. While my classmates were busily queueing to have their photographs taken with the furry animal, I wasn't interested. Over the years, I've made many trips to the zoo, but never once had it crossed my mind to have tea with her albeit the throngs of foreign visitors who would queue for ages even if just for a snap with the famed orang utan. The news of Ah Meng's passing on still fresh in my mind, I sure feel a slight tinge of regret not having a single photo taken of or with her.
